|This book is a collection of eleven essays devoted to the work of Ramon del Valle-Inclan (1866-1936). Long the recipient of critical analyses from various perspectives, Valle-Inclan's writing has nevertheless been virtually neglected in the gender-based criticism that has given rise to important studies of his contemporaries in other European literatures. This means that his diverse female characters have not been fully examined, that many scholars continue to consider him an unqualified misogynist, and that a marked effort to surmount gender constraints, present throughout his work, has not been acknowledged, much less explicated. This lack of study is intimately related to a much broader lacuna in Hispanic literature and scholarship, for the working of gender norms and their interaction with economic, religious, and political institutions inscribed in the literature of turn-of-the-century Spain have only recently begun to receive detailed study.| |The essays in this volume identify, explore, and interrogate issues of gender with respect to Valle-Inclan's writing. The results offer an altered portrait of Valle-Inclan in which attitudes attributed to him are questioned and reevaluated. In particular, studies of several strong female characters indicate that he envisioned a far more complex role for women than has formerly been recognized.| |Three previously published essays were chosen to provide a grounding in work on gender and Valle-Inclan. The remaining essays were written for this volume. In previous work [6], we presented a novel information theoretic approach for calculating fMRI activation maps. The information-theoretic approach is - pealing in that it is a principled methodology requiring few assumptions about the structure of the fMRI signal. In that approach, activation was quanti'ed by measuring the mutual information (MI) between the protocol signal and the fMRI time-series at a givenvoxel.This measureis capable of detecting unknown nonlinear and higher-order statistical dependencies. Furthermore, it is relatively straightforward to implement. In practice,activation decisions at eachvoxelareindependent of neighboring voxels. Spurious responses are then removed by ad hoc techniques (e.g. morp- logicaloperators).Inthispaper,wedescribeanautomaticmaximumaposteriori (MAP) detection method where the well-known Ising model is used as a spatial prior.The Isingspatialpriordoes not assumethat the time-seriesofneighboring voxelsareindependentofeachother.Furthermore,removalofspuriousresponses is an implicit component of the detection formulation. In order to formulate the calculation of the activation map using this technique we ?rst demonstrate that the information-theoretic approach has a natural interpretation in the hypo- esis testing framework and that, speci'cally, our estimate of MI approximates the log-likelihood ratio of that hypothesis test. Consequently, the MAP det- tion problem using the Ising model can be formulated and solved exactly in polynomial time using the Ford and Fulkerson method [4]. We compare the results of our approach with and without spatial priors to an approachbased on the general linear model (GLM) popularized by Fristonet al [3]. We present results from three fMRI data sets. The data sets test motor, auditory, and visual cortex activation, respectively.

This is the second in a series of |International Workshops on Electron Correlations and Materials Properties. | The aim of this series of workshops is to provide a periodic (triennial) and in-depth assessment of advances in the study and understanding of the effects that electron-electron interactions in solids have on the determination of measurable properties of materials. The workshop is structured to include exposure to experimental work, to phenomenology, and to ab initio theory. Since correlation effects are pervasive the workshop aims to concentrate on the identification of promising developing methodology, experimental and theoretical, addressing the most critical frontier issues of electron correlations on the properties of materials. This series of workshops is distinguished from other topical meetings and conferences in that it strongly promotes an interdisciplinary approach to the study of correlations, involving the fields of quantum chemistry, physics, and materials science. The First Workshop was held June 28-July 3, 1998, and a proceedings of the workshop was published by KluwerlPlenum. The Second Workshop was held June 24- 29,2001, and this volume contains the proceedings of that scientific meeting. Through the publications of proceedings, the workshop attempts to disseminate the information gathered during the discussions held at the Workshop to the wider scientific community, and to establish a record of advances in the field.
