This first introductory-level textbook on the design of small molecules is written with the first-time user in mind. Aimed at students and scientists alike, it uses computer-based methods to design and analyze such small molecules as drugs, enzyme inhibitors, probes and markers for biomolecules. Both authors have extensive practical experience of modeling and design and share their knowledge of what can and cannot be done with computer-assisted design. Divided into four sections, the book begins with a look at molecular objects and design objectives, including molecular geometry, properties, recognition and dynamics. Two further sections deal with virtual synthesis and screening, while the final section covers navigation in chemical space. The result is a textbook that takes the modeler one step further, to the de novo design of functional molecules. With its study questions at the end of each learning unit, this is equally suitable for teaching and self-learning.

Now in its third edition, this trusted clinical guide enables both the busy practitioner and student to review or to learn about a range of pathologies, conditions, examinations, diagnostic procedures, and interventions that can be effectively used in the physical rehabilitation of older people. It presents a broad overview of age-related physiological changes as well as specific professional discipline perspectives. Organized into eleven distinct and interrelated units, the first unit begins with key anatomical and physiological considerations seen with aging which have significant impact on the older person. The second and third units go on to review important aging-related conditions and disorders of the musculoskeletal and neuromuscular/neurological systems respectively. Neoplasms commonly encountered in older people are the focus of the fourth unit; while aging-related conditions of the cardiovascular, pulmonary, integumentary and sensory systems are presented in units five through seven. Unit eight highlights a range of specific clinical problems and conditions commonly encountered with older patients. Critically, all of these units emphasize important examination and diagnostic procedures needed for a thorough evaluation and stress interventions that can be of significant benefit to the older patient. The ninth unit presents select physical therapeutic interventions that are especially important in managing rehabilitative care. Key societal issues related to aging are discussed in the tenth unit. Finally, the concluding eleventh unit focuses on the successful rehabilitation team that includes both professional and non-professional caregiver members. A trusted guide to the conditions and problems faced when evaluating and treating geriatric patients Extensive coverage over 84 chapters, each written by an expert in the field Includes imaging, vision and the aging ear Cross-referenced - providing the complexity and inter-relatedness of co-morbidities common to aging patients Collaborative international perspective Chapters on the aging spine; frailty; safe pilates for bone health; health care for older people Additional renowned editor - Ronald W. Whether you are practicing in an in-patient or an out-patient facility, academic institution, or clinical residency program, this well-respected handbook gives you the background and guidance you need to effectively educate individuals across the continuum of physical therapy practice. Practical, real-life examples show you how to: incorporate health literacy and needs of the learner; assess and adapt to the various learning styles of patients; use simulations in education; facilitate the development of clinical reasoning skills; and assess learning outcomes and the effectiveness of your teaching. Plus, four all-new chapters and major revisions of all content throughout the book keep you on top of the latest research and best practices. Coverage of the theory and application of educational principles across the continuum of PT practice provides the information you need to improve your skills in the educational process both in academic and clinical settings. Two section format divides content into two parts: designing academic and clinical education programs and teaching students in academic and clinical settings; and teaching patients and families in clinical and community settings. Variety of teaching and teaching assessment methods expands your teaching, learning, and assessment repertoires. Case stories at the beginning of each chapter allow you to see the relevance of the information in the chapter. Threshold concepts highlight key ideas that are important to know. Annotated bibliography at end of each chapter provides resources for further study. NEW! Chapter on Authentic Assessment: Simulation-Based Education reflects the new ways to facilitate student learning through the use of human simulation models. NEW! Chapter on Strategies for Planning and Implementing Interprofessional Education covers the fundamental concepts of team-based care and interprofessional learning. NEW! To sum up, the book is well written and is definitely one that was missing from the area of special needs education. The possibilities of technology are changing and the requirements of good practice in responding to a diversity of needs are becoming more demanding than ever. In a period of too much |theorizing| in the area, I was overwhelmed by the range of information, hints, tips and useful advice contained in this book which could be of direct help to those on the |front line.| I would strongly recommend the book to teachers, ICT co-ordinators, classroom assistants, therapists as well as parents' - |British Journal of Educational Psychology | If you feel in need of quite a generalized |annual| as a starting point to cover the use of technology with special needs learners then this book may well be of interest' - |Widening Participation and Lifelong Learning |Mike Blamires has edited a useful volume of papers written by colleagues and others engaged in using technology to meet special educational needs.... Overall, this book is well aimed at special needs teachers, ICT coordinators and teachers in mainstream schools and I recommend it' - |Computers and Education |What is enabling technology?; How can enabling technology become a powerful tool for inclusion?; What is inclusion anyway? These are the questions that this book addresses. Enabling Technology for Inclusion is about the leading edge of the best practice. It updates the debate on inclusive education, placing enabling technology within the context of universal design for learning, and innovative thinking about social, physical and cognitive inclusion. This book describes practice as it is now, and what needs to be considered in planning to meet the needs of learners, securing access to appropriate IT, and training those who will be using it. Its message is that technology can enable people to be included within their communities and educational institutions. Technology can provide a temporary or permanent support for learners to establish their voice and achieve things that they could not have done otherwise.Technology can have a powerful role in re-shaping the curriculum. The contributors have extensive expertise in the use of Information Communications Technology as a tool for inclusion in partnership with people with a large diversity of strengths and learning needs. They use this knowledge to enable readers to enhance their own understandings and critical frameworks for the use of these potentially powerful tools for learning and inclusion.

As director of a training program in medical informatics, I have found that one of the most frequent inquiries from graduate students is, |Although I am happy with my research focus and the work I have done, how can I design and carry out a practical evaluation that proves the value of my contribution?| Informatics is a multifaceted, interdisciplinary field with research that ranges from theoretical developments to projects that are highly applied and intended for near-term use in clinical settings. The implications of |proving| a research claim accordingly vary greatly depending on the details of an individual student's goals and thesis state ment. Furthermore, the dissertation work leading up to an evaluation plan is often so time-consuming and arduous that attempting the |perfect| evaluation is fre quently seen as impractical or as diverting students from central programming or implementation issues that are their primary areas of interest. They often ask what compromises are possible so they can provide persuasive data in support of their claims without adding another two to three years to their graduate student life. Our students clearly needed help in dealing more effectively with such dilem mas, and it was therefore fortuitous when, in the autumn of 1991, we welcomed two superb visiting professors to our laboratories.

This volume collects recent studies conducted within the area of medical education that investigate two of the critical components of problem-based curricula--the group meeting and self-directed learning--and demonstrates that understanding these complex phenomena is critical to the operation of this innovative curriculum. It is the editors' contention that it is these components of problem-based learning that connect the initiating |problem| with the process of effective |learning.| Revealing how this occurs is the task taken on by researchers contributing to this volume. The studies include use of self-reports, interviews, observations, verbal protocols, and micro-analysis to find ways into the psychological processes and sociological contexts that constitute the world of problem-based learning.

Dyslexia research has been proceeding by quantum leaps. Great advances have been made in the past few years, and while many unanswered questions remain, we nonetheless do know a great deal about the causes and nature of the condition, and how teachers should treat it. This book, by two of Europe's leading experts, gathers together a vast amount of recent international research on the causes and remediation of dyslexia, and presents a cognitive model of the normal reading process and a process-analytic diagnostic model. Much of this material appears in English for the first time.

Theoretical Principles of Distance Education PDF

According to UNESCO statistics, 10 million of the world's 600 million students study at a distance. Theoretical Principles of Distance Education seeks to lay solid foundations for the education of these students and for the structures within which they study. As a more industrialised form of education provision, distance education is well adapted to the use of new communication technologies, and brings to education many of the strengths and dangers of post-industrialism. The central focus of the study of distance education is the placing of the student at home or at work and the justification of the abandonment in this form of education of interpersonal, face-to-face communication, previously considered to be a cultural imperative for education in both east and west. This book explores the problems that distance education poses to the theorist, bringing together an international team of distance educators to address these issues for the first time in a systematic way. The team comprises theoreticians, administrators, experts in educational technology and adult education, experts in learning from video machines, from computers and other forms of technology. Contributions from Italy, and Scandinavia contrast with viewpoints provided by scholars from the US, Canada, Australia, and the UK.

This bestselling book is a unique introduction to the practice of university teaching and its underlying theory. This new edition has been fully revised and updated in view of the extensive changes which have taken place in higher education over the last decade and includes new material on the higher education context, evaluation and staff development. The first part of the book provides an outline of the experience of teaching and learning from the student's point of view, out of which grows a set of prinicples for effective teaching in higher education. Part two shows how these ideas can enhance educational standards, looking in particular at four key areas facing every teacher in higher education: * Organising the content of undergraduate courses * Selecting teaching methods * Assessing student learning * Evaluating the effectivenesss of teaching. Case studies of exemplary teaching are used throughout to connect ideas to practice and to illustrate how to ensure better student learning. The final part of the book looks in more detail at appraisal, performance indicators, accountability and educational development and training. The book is essential reading for new and experienced lecturers, particularly those following formal programmes in university teaching, such as courses leading to ILT accreditation.

This book outlines the basic principles of creation and maintenance of taxonomies and thesauri. It also provides step by step instructions for building a taxonomy or thesaurus and discusses the various ways to get started on a taxonomy construction project. Often, the first step is to get management and budgetary approval, so I start this book with a discussion of reasons to embark on the taxonomy journey. From there I move on to a discussion of metadata and how taxonomies and metadata are related, and then consider how, where, and why taxonomies are used. Information architecture has its cornerstone in taxonomies and metadata. While a good discussion of information architecture is beyond the scope of this work, I do provide a brief discussion of the interrelationships among taxonomies, metadata, and information architecture. Moving on to the central focus of this book, I introduce the basics of taxonomies, including a definition of vocabulary control and why it is so important, how indexing and tagging relate to taxonomies, a few of the types of tagging, and a definition and discussion of post- and pre-coordinate indexing. After that I present the concept of a hierarchical structure for vocabularies and discuss the differences among various kinds of controlled vocabularies, such as taxonomies, thesauri, authority files, and ontologies. Once you have a green light for your project, what is the next step? Here I present a few options for the first phase of taxonomy construction and then a more detailed discussion of metadata and markup languages. I believe that it is important to understand the markup languages (SGML and XML specifically, and HTML to a lesser extent) in relation to information structure, and how taxonomies and metadata feed into that structure. After that, I present the steps required to build a taxonomy, from defining the focus, collecting and organizing terms, analyzing your vocabulary for even coverage over subject areas, filling in gaps, creating relationships between terms, and applying those terms to your content. Here I offer a cautionary note: don’t believe that your taxonomy is “done!” Regular, scheduled maintenance is an important—critical, really—component of taxonomy construction projects. After you’ve worked through the steps in this book, you will be ready to move on to integrating your taxonomy into the workflow of your organization. This is covered in Book 3 of this series. Table of Contents: List of Figures / Preface / Acknowledgments / Building a Case for Building a Taxonomy / Taxonomy Basics / Getting Started / Terms: The Building Blocks of a Taxonomy / Building the Structure of Your Taxonomy / Evaluation and Maintenance / Standards and Taxonomies / Glossary / End Notes / Author Biography

Translation is a phenomenon that affects us all on a daily basis, the more so now that dissemination of information is greatly enhanced by modern technology. However, there are no strict regulations on who can become a translator and what qualifications are required. The contributors to this volume strive to find out whether translators are taught, self-taught or trained, what the teaching or training programmes are like and how they can be improved. This is a companion volume to Teaching Translation and Interpreting: Challenges and Practices (edited by Łukasz Bogucki, Cambridge Scholars Publishing, 2010). It contains papers delivered at two international conferences devoted to teaching translation and interpreting, organised in Łódź, Poland, as well as invited contributions. The authors are translation and interpreting scholars and teachers from leading Polish and Ukrainian universities.

This book is the final result of a team effort involving a large number of international experts, coordinated and led by Dr. Marcelo Sosa-Iudicissa, in Brussels, Dr. Nora Oliveri, in Buenos Aires, Dr. Carlos A. Gamboa, in Washington, and Ms. Jean Roberts, in England. They have attracted and assembled together the contributions of 80 specialists from over 20 countries in North America, Europe and Latin America. This makes the present book a unique publication, presenting a true global vision of the opportunities opened up by the advent of the Internet for doctors, health professionals, planners and managers, as well as for patients and the public at large, wanting to know more and better about their own health maintenance and protection. It also presents a range of informatics and telematics applications available nowadays to medicine, examples on how people with a health concern are using the Internet in both industrialised and developing countries. This change, bringing empowerment through knowledge, is showing us the trend towards a New Health Paradigm in the In-formation Society. This book is aimed at medical practitioners, administrators, teachers and students who wish an authoritative state-of-the-art as well as how-to for commencing or enhancing wish done on the Internet. A self-contained CD-Rom is included with the book, providing readers with a flying start in accessing key information sounds.
